As the Environmental Planning program at MVRPC has broadened its scope, there was a need to develop and manage a forum for member jurisdictions, environmental advocates, businesses, partner agencies, and academia to provide input and technical expertise to a range of issues. The Areawide Water Quality Management Plan established a subcommittee to specifically address issues related to Wastewater Treatment Facility Planning. But there was need for input on an increasing number of topics, including emerging contaminants, environmental justice, and climate change.
In 2023 MVRPC established the Water and Environment Subcommittee (WESC) to serve as that more comprehensive forum for the discussion of any environmental issues that come before the Regional Planning Commission. The WESC will continue the work of Wastewater Treatment Facility Planning, and will also address matters regarding Climate Pollution Reduction Planning. Other environmental issues will be addressed at WESC meetings as the needs arise.
